Featured at the Rotary Family Day were free rides on the museum’s “Chippewa Northwestern Railway”-a one-inch scale railroad, offering free rides on the second Sunday afternoon of the month.  Guests were invited to ride behind the steam powered one-inch scale locomotives, providing a “hands on” access to all visitors on live steam railroading.  For more information on the Chippewa Northwestern Railway, visit  http://www.the-chippewa.org.

Area SCHS museum volunteers served as hosted for the five buildings that day-educating the visitors to the various contents and history of their exhibits.  The Seward Rotary also hosted a free “old fashioned” ice cream social for all the visitors, serving over 100+ dishes of special cake and ice cream.  Representing the Seward Rotary as servers at the ice cream social were Rotary Club representatives Russ Sommerfeld, Nina Sommerfeld, Jon Kruse and Clark Kolterman.  A special children’s scavenger hunt was also part of the event, sponsored by the Seward County Historical Society, using a special booklet with prizes for the champions completing the hunt.

The Seward County Historical Society was organized in 1967-the centennial year for Nebraska, Seward County and Seward.  The Goehner SCHS Museum was dedicated in 1979 and is open, with free admission, from May through October with hours on Sundays from 1:30 to 5:00 pm and Thursdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.  Contact them at 402-523-4055 or visit them on their Facebook page.

The Rotary District theme centers on the concept of Family and promotes family events throughout this year-under the theme “Be the Inspiration!”  Todd LaVelle is the local President of the Seward Rotary Club.
