Landon Nelson, Seward High Senior, was honored by Seward Rotary Club as its February Youth Rotarianat the Feb. 10th Seward Rotary Club luncheon meeting at the Seward Civic Center
Landon Nelson was honored at the Feb. 10th Seward Rotary Club luncheon meeting as the February 2021 Youth Rotarian. Landon is the son of Jaala and Duane Nelson of Seward.
 
First in Landon’s many accomplishments is his dedication to academics. He is a scholar and member of the SHS National Honor Society.  He Have been on the SHS Honor Roll all 12 terms of his high school career and involved with many AP/Dual Credit College classes including AP Calculus, Statistics, Writing and Research, Public Speaking, Psychology, Computer Fundamentals and Computer Programing.  He has been nominated for numerous P.R.I.D.E. Awards by the SHS faculty and has his name on the ACT Academic Wall at SHS for his high score on his ACT test.  He is a seven year member of the High Ability Learner Program. And participated in the UNL Math Day for three years.
 
Landon is a member of the SHS Writing Club for three years, writing short stories and poetry and participated in the annual Nebraska State Fair Education Division competitions in Math, Grammar,and Social Studies for eleven years. 
 
He has been an Seward High Ambassador for four years, serving as a host for the school when called upon for various tours and conferences.    He has served as a counselor for the SMS Outdoor Education Program for the last two years. 
 
Landon loves the Arts. He has been part of the One Act Play Production competition for two years and a member of the SHS Show Choir, as well as the SHS Select Choir, along with participation in the annual SHS Musical for the last three years.  He has entered and been recognized with his art work in the annual GFWC Seward Junior Women’s Club Art Show and the Fair Art Contests. 
 
He also volunteers as a member of the SHS Key Club, participating in the Multicultural Fair and the various activities of their service group and a devoted member to the Skills USA Chapter in Seward, participating on the state contests in Web Design and 3-D Animation.  He placed first in 3-D Animation and placed 14th in the National Competition in Louisville, Kentucky.
 
He is involved with the Seward Pheasants Forever Program, working with gun safety, and animal conservation.  He also was a leader in the Seward County Fair Grounds Clean-up following the last flood with all the damage. He has been employed with Syngenta Seeds as a Pollinator since June of 2016and enjoys working outdoors for two months in the corn each summer as a crew leader. He is a member of a non-denominational Christian Church - a voice for youth in the congregation and involved with their church youth group and their volunteer activities.
 
Landon plans to attend Central Community College in Hastings for three years to earn an Advanced Manufacturing Design Degree and a Degree in Drafting and Design Technology and then transfer to UNL to finish with a Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
 
His “Service Above Self” fulfilment is his involvement with community service projects through Key Club and Skills USA, along the Pheasants Forever and the Seward County Fairgrounds clean-up.  He volunteered many hours working with Middle School students as a camp counselor at their annual camp and helped with a variety of projects of service with his church as well. 
 
He was presented with a Rotary Book Scholarship and some Rotary Club mementos, and is now a candidate for the for the annual Seward Rotary Club Youth Rotarian of the Year Award, announced in May at the annual Honors Night.  Applications for the Rotary Youth of the Month can be obtained by talking to your SHS counselors.  One award is presented monthly during the school year.
