Anna Hughes was named the 2020-21 Youth Rotarian of the Year by Seward Rotary Club
Seward High Senior Anna Hughes has recognized as the Seward Rotary Club Youth Rotarian of the Year for 2020-21. She is the daughter of John and Jana Hughes of Seward.
 
Hughes is first a scholar, with a 4.2 GPA, ranked Summa Cum Laude, an ACT Score of 32, and a member of the Seward High School Honor Roll for 12 consecutive terms.  She took many Advanced Placement classes and is certified in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. 
 
Hughes was a leader in the National Honor Society and the school representative on the Seward Public Schools District board.  She was a three sport athlete, an involved leader in the Volleyball, Basketball, and Track programs.  She was a member of the SHS Volleyball program for four years and lettered in 2018 and 2019.  She was a leader on the Basketball team for three years, and lettered both in 2018 and 2019.  She won a letter in Track in 2018. 
 
Hughes was President of the Seward High Leadership Team (student council) and was been involved in every aspect of the program, working on student leadership programs and school improvement, as well as a voice for the students at SHS.  She was a SHS Ambassador since 2017 and was an active member of the Skills USA program, competing in the Skills State Conference.  Her Skills USA State events were culinary arts, baking, and opening and closing ceremonies (OCC). She was also the President of the SHS Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), competed at state conferences and won Third Place in the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge.  Her State FBLA competitions included various business presentations and accounting tests.
 
Hughes' community leadership centered on her membership in the Shooting Stars 4H Club.  She is the Past President of the club and been involved in almost every aspect of 4-H.  She is a member of the Holy Savior Lutheran Church in Lincoln and active in the St. John Lutheran Church Godparent program, having taught Vacation Bible School both at St. John and Holy Savior, while also assisting with the Summer Horizon’s Program in Seward.  
 
Her employment experience included working for Premier Detasseling in 2016 and 2017, employment with Hughes Brothers in 2018, and as a Lifeguard at Dowding Memorial Swimming Pool in 2019 and 2020.  She also has been a babysitter for many area families.
 
“It was obvious that Hannah is the 'go to' volunteer at Seward High as she was always leading and serving in some manner,” stated Rotarian Clark Kolterman. “She has been a faithful servant leader for all four years of her Seward High School career and is well deserving of this honor.  Congrats and thanks to Anna for living the Rotary motto of ‘Service Above Self’”
 
Hughes' community service involvement includes volunteering for many activities at both St. John and Holy Savior, assisting the Goehner Volunteer Fire Department at their annual Spaghetti Feed and working with many community service projects through the SHS FBLA, SHS Skills USA and her 4H Club and the SHS Leadership Team. She has also volunteered for many youth summer camps in volleyball and basketball during her high school career and assisted in a host of community activities as well.
 
After high school Anna’s plans to major in a finance program, hoping to have an eventual career in finance and business.
