Be careful what you wish for, as the rescheduled Seward Rotary Kite Flying contest, which was rescheduled several times, finally happened during a beautiful Seward spring afternoon, complete with full gusts of wind-and the Rotarians had the wind they hoped for the kite contest and more!  The annual J. Don Miller Memorial Seward Rotary Kite Flying Contest was held on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Seward Plum Creek Park Soccer Fields.  The event is sponsored by the Seward Rotary and memorializes the late, longtime Seward Rotarian J. Don Miller, who was a longtime promoter of the contest and even sponsored kite making workshops.
 
All ages are welcome to join in a fly kites and awards are presented at the end of the afternoon.  The contest is free to enter and all expenses are donated by the Seward Rotary Club. Trophies were presented in various categories, depending on the contestants entered and what happens at the contest.  
 
Winners included Caleb Venetis-age 6-“First Up” and “Farthest Flown Kite,” Holly Venetis-age 10-“Best Traditional Kite,”  Kathy Hartmann-Adult-“Best “Bird” Kite,” Dick Miers-Adult-“Top Senior Kite Flyer,” Ben Hartmann-Adult-Skull Kite-“Spookiest Kite,”  Zoey Martin-age 7-“Best Cartoon Kite,”  Jill Martin-Adult-“Best Mother/Daughter Kite Flying Team,”  MacKenna Wollenburg-age 8-“Most Unique Kite,” Sawyer Wollenburg-age 6-“Best Tail on a Kite,”  Samuel Coe-age 1-“Youngest Flyer,”  Xavier Ettwein-age 12 and Carter Moore-age 3-“Best Kite Flying Team.”  The trophies were all donated by the Seward Rotary Club.
 
The annual kite contest is held in the spring by the Seward Rotary Club to encourage families to enjoy the outdoors and share in special family time. Clark Kolterman served as the Rotary Club event chair.
