Our Stories

Rowling This program will be presented by Concordia University Prof. Kathy Miller and several of her students from their class project, "The Family," where students interviewed local Seward residents about their stories, families, and history. They will share with us what they learned about those they interviewed, our community, and themselves as a result of this unique project all about making connections. The public is welcome to join us for this special presentation. |

HoriSun Hospice

The mission of HoriSun Hospice, Inc. of Lincoln is to "deliver the highest level of holistic hospice care with honor and respect for patients and their families." This program will provide Seward Rotarians with the opportunity to learn more about hospice care and Medicare hospice benefits generally, as well as about HoriSun Hospice and the services they provide in particular. A good chance to gain information about an increasingly important part of end of life care. |

Principal Amber Fiala will tell us about what's happening this year at St. John and how this 135 year old place of learning continues to provide an excellent education to its students and families. |

Concordia's Ag Science Program

Concordia University announced in December that it will begin offering a Bachelors of Science in Agricultural Science in 2019. What lead the university to start this program? What is its focus? How could it be a benefit to Seward County and our community? Dr. Dennis Brink, who, as a Concordia Regent, has been involved in the development and launch of this program, will provide an overview of Concordia Ag during this program, which the public is welcome to attend. |

The Child Welfare System in Nebraska

Julie Rogers is the Inspector General of Nebraska Child Welfare. In this role, Ms. Rogers provides an independent form of inquiry and review of the agencies and individuals response for the care and protection of children in the Child Welfare and Juvenile Probation systems, including children in foster care. Over the past decade, a number of initiatives have been undertaken with regard to both juvenile justice and foster care. This program will provide insights into the important issues facing many children in Nebraska. |

Husker Football and Good Food

As spring football for the Huskers arrives, the host of the Omaha World-Herald's radio show, The Bottom Line, joins Seward Rotary Club to talk about expectations for the Big Red in 2019, question marks and answers on offense and defense, and the outlook for year two of Scott Frost. In between, he may take some culinary detours that will have you craving ribs or wondering why exactly Nebraskans put hamburger on pizza. |

The 2011 Japan Earthquake & Tsunami

In 2011, northern Japan experienced the twin disaster of an earthquake and resulting tsunami that left 20,000 dead and destroyed a nuclear power plant. Seward residents John and Karen Seevers, who lived and worked in Japan for four decades until retiring full-time to Seward two years ago, will share their first hand experience and talk about how the nation responded to the devestation. |

Mission Work in Alaska

When one thinks of the work of Christian missionaries, images of priests and pastors in an overseas country comes to mind. Mission work, however, is taking place right here in the United States, including in the Last Frontier, Alaska. Seward resident Jan Bruck, who is the Servant Events Coordinator for Alaska Mission for Christ, will talk about her organization's mission and witness work in the 49th State. We'll also hear what it's like to commute between Seward and Anchorage for work! |

Join Seward Rotary Club and special guest speaker, Matt Davison, Associate Athletic Director for University of Nebraska-Lincoln Athletics, on Saturday, May 18th for a special evening to celebrate and recognize community service in Seward County! Highlighting the event will be the presentations of the "Service Above Self" Award to Clayton Kent and the Wayne Tanderup Award to Kathy Broeker. The evening includes a social hour, dinner, and auction, with all net proceeds supporting the Nebraska National Guard Museum and End Polio Now, Rotary International's effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Tickets are $30 a piece and tables of 8 are available for $300. Table purchasers will receive an autographed football, recognition in the evening's program, and recognition during the event. Nebraska District's Seward Project

Over the past months, a lot has been happening there. Osten Observatory

One of the hidden gems in our community is Concordia University's Osten Observatory. Dedicated in 2002, the observatory is located on the northeast corner of the university's campus off Hillcrest Drive. Dr. Robert Hermann, professor of physics, will provide an overview of the 16 inch computer controlled telescope, how the university uses it, and opportunities for the community to enjoy this wonderful tool to enjoy the night sky. |

From Cornrows to Hedgerows

This week's meeting will be held at the Nebraska National Guard Museum to allow a special program - a first look at the museum's much anticipated "From Cornrows to Hedgerows" exhibit that dramatically depicts the Battle of St. Lo, France, where more than 50 Nebraskans lost their lives freeing Europe from the grips of tyranny. Seward Rotary Club is proud to be a sponsor of this important exhibit that honors those who provided the ultimate example of "service above self," giving their lives in the defense of our nation. This will be a great way to kick off our new Rotary year. See you there, Rotarians! |
