Crime in Seward County, 1869-1908

Dr. Jerry Pfabe, Concordia University professor emeritus, will talk about the scofflaws, ruffians, outlaws and scoundrels of early Seward County, as well as their various, nefarious misdeeds, during what promises to be an englightening program that will make us thankful that we live in a kinder, gentler time...or at least one with attentive law enforcement. |

Join Seward Rotary Club and John Cook, Nebraska Volleyball Head Coach, to celebrate service in Seward County! Dixie Zabka will receive the Service Above Self Award for all she has done for the Seward community and Dave Ficke will receive the Wayne Tanderup Award, recognizing his overcoming hardship and being a successful contributor to the Seward Community. In addition to Coach Cook, this year's event features a social hour, dinner, and auction. The social hour starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner, program and auction. Proceeds from the event will support local “Service Above Self” projects and Rotary International’s worldwide eradication of Polio. |

A Year in Seward

Since August 2018, Baki Terzic of Zurich, Switzerland has been living with Rotarians Brady and Jill Johnson and their family as a foreign exchange student. She will share her reflections and reactions to her experiences, studies at Seward High School, and time in our community. We'll also be joined by Baki's parents for what promises to be a program that causes us to see our community from a different perspective.

Concordia's New Construction Project

In April, Concordia University broke ground on the Dunklau Center for Science, Math and Business, an 86,000 square foot academic facility that will house the university's natural science, business, math, and computer science programs. Dr. Rob Hermann, Chair of the Natural Sciences Department and faculty liaison for the facility design process, will provide an overview on these programs at the university and the new facility being constructed to house them. This will be an exciting and informative program, no hardhats required. |

"The Better Half"

During 2017, Omaha World-Herald's husband and wife duo, columnist Matthew Hansen, a native of Red Cloud, and food critic Sarah Baker Hansen, a native Omahan, traveled around Nebraska and encountered the people, places, and foods across our state that make this the Good Life. They shared their adventures in a series of newspaper columns (http://www.omaha.com/living/the-better-half/) and a book entitled "The Better Half." Sarah and Matthew will share some of their Nebraska adventures and discoveries at Seward Rotary on Wednesday, June 20th. Make plans now to join Seward Rotary for what promises to be an informative, interesting, and delightful presentation, well told. The public is welcome, lunch is $7.50 for non-Rotarians. |

Expanding Access to the Justice System

According to American Bar Association research, 85% of the public's legal needs go unmet. There are many factors for this, including income and location - did you know that 12 of Nebraska's 93 counties have no attorneys? The Nebraska State Bar Association is attempting to expand access to Nebraska's justice system through a variety of initiatives, including its Volunteer Lawyers Project and Rural Practice Initiative. Liz Neeley, Executive Director of the NSBA and a Sewardite, will discuss this important need and the efforts underway to ensure "equality before the law" for Nebraskans. |

The Seward Rotary Club and the Seward High Future Business Leaders of America (SHS FBLA) are again sponsoring a Holiday Home Outdoor Lighting Contest for the homes in Seward to celebrate the Seward Fourth of July. Since it is the Sesquicentennial of Seward, Seward County and Nebraska, is will promote their theme of “Deep Roots-High Hopes” and the contestants will be judged on Saturday, June 30, so they can be featured and announced prior to the Fourth. To nominate a home or self-nominate your home, contact Sandy Wright at the Jones National Bank and Trust in Seward at 643-3602 or email Clark Kolterman at clark.kolterman@sewardschools.org. Please provide the address and name of the resident being nominated. The homes will be judged on Saturday, June 30, starting at 6:00 pm. |

Long time Seward resident Brent Royuk, who teaches at Concordia, has done extensive research on the residence at 142 Seward St. On July 4th, he presented his findings at the Civic Center in what was a highly regarded, and well received, program. We're thankful that he is willing to share this program that will provide an unusual, very specific look at Seward history with our Rotary Club. As always, the public is welcome to join us at noon. |

Rotary's Polio Eradication Efforts

Rev. Tom Hyde, a member of Lincoln (Neb.) South Rotary, has been a member of several Rotary clubs across the state. When he started his pastoral career nearly 40 years ago, he chose Rotary as his service club because of the impact it has. Rotary's international efforts, particularly to eradicate polio, are a passion of Tom's, who has traveled to both Zambia and India, and he'll share his experiences with Seward Rotary during this program. |

Basic Combat Training

This past summer, two of Seward's own - Cayden Gland and Jax Johnson - enlisted in the National Guard and went through the 10 week Basic Combat Training course. They will discuss their experience, why they decided to join the National Guard, and what lies ahead for them in this journey.
